HUMAN THERMODYNAMICS…towards enhancing business output

“You are a big chemical reaction. Everything you say, all that you do, all that you see, decide or remember, think or feel is nothing but the manifestation of the chemical reaction that is you.”-----Jim Eadon

Sigmund Freud is recognized as the founder of Psychodynamics, the science that studies the impact of psychological forces underlying human behaviour. Human Thermodynamics is an offshoot of Psychodynamics where laws of Thermodynamics are applied to analyze human behaviour.Thermodynamics is the study of energy transformations of dynamic systems and the work output delivered by them. Efficiency is the ratio of the useful energy delivered by a dynamic system to the input energy. English physicist Charles Galton Darwin (who happens to be the grandson of Charles Darwin) in 1952 first gave the true outline of the field of Human Thermodynamics in his book “The Next Million Years”. Since then research in this subject has increased manifold and is still burgeoning.

Central to the topic is the concept of Human Molecule(a dynamic system), a term coined by French philosopher Hippolyte Taine in 1869; it is a matter of logical reasoning that quantitative formulations and predictions on "potential" human interactions (reactions) will have significant, time saving, and quality improving meaning.

Human organism has been conceived as a 26-element bio molecule whose behaviour is determined by the integration of the physical characteristics of the constituent elements whose physical and chemical interactions are bound by the laws of thermodynamics.

THE BUSINESS MOLECULE

Two or more human molecules when are occupationally bound for some specific economic function constitute a business molecule. The interactions, exchanges, dynamics, and financial reactions that take place between sets of business molecules define what is called business chemistry. As the world gets condensed due to globalization, cross-functional group decision making is slowly but steadily emerging as the single most important differentiator for successful multinational organizational functioning. Moreover organizations now a day are contracting management consultants in order to have strategic, industry-specific and technology-specific human skill sets in order to overcome complex problems. Innovation and transformation are the buzz words in today’s business. Business thermodynamics studies the energitics associated with these transformative processes.

ENHANCING THE OUTPUT

Taking cue from the fact that efficiency can be increased either by reducing energy inputs or enhancing services for a given input, a BMO (Business Molecular Organism) can function optimally only when the HMOs (Human Molecular Organisms) with which it is composed of are accurately paired. Forming the right team is sacrosanct. Thus taking analogy from a chemical reaction it would have been natural to throw the proposed team in “business reaction test tube” and measure the BMO’s output, adding and removing individuals to optimize the team’s performance and then benchmarking this quotient.

A typical project team requires some input(human capital) to deliver the output(the project). If these energy inputs can be properly identified along with the correlative human chemical reactions within a particular system then the output efficiency can be rightly predicted. Identifying skill-sets to requirements and ensuring that those aren’t duplicated within the group are the foremost steps that need to be taken. A practical way to assess energy release is to have several team meetings with specific goals towards preparing for project launch. Specific goals should be short in nature, and should be directly measurable against stated objectives. The manager should be able to determine how members are interacting, who interacts most efficiently with one another, who has specific strengths which can leveraged, and which individuals have specific weaknesses which should either be downplayed or cause them to be removed from the team. The manager should analyze the teams output based on time to delivery, quality and completeness. These are the basic tenets that will guide the successfulness of any project initiative, but more importantly, these are the basic tenants that will determine how much energy release can be expected and the overall efficiency of the project team increased. By further understanding how to optimally organize the business molecular structure as a symbiotic unit, and how to improve the source and processing of fuel(human input) in order to create more efficient work output, an organizations ‘return on investment’ can be increased! For a consultant or project leader prediction of project efficiency is the USP.
